THE WITCH by Mary Johnston is a very well written novel of a country girl in England in the 1600's. It is also about a physician, who lives in the same county, and their love. It has many twists and turns. It is a sweet, but also sad romance. The girl is accused of being a witch and the physician is accused of being a sorcerer. This book is hard to read in parts because it is written in the language of the day. It is a serious story, not light and happy. I recommend this book.Product details

Highly entertaining Historical Fiction set in England after the death of Elizabeth I. The protagonists are unjustly accused of witchcraft, sorcery, and apostasy. The characters, including the villains are well drawn; the writing is excellent. The story is hard to put down. Even when facing certain death, the love of the main characters transcends the surrounding world of intolerance and hatred. The novel is possibly one of the most romantic stories I have ever read.
The language that the story is written is often difficult to understand. The meaning and usage of the words are at times long forgotten. There are times when I look forward to the period at the end of very long and dictionary needing sentences. I am no scholar, but those of you who read Shakespeare may get more out of it than I am. I will continue reading to see if I get further absorbed.
