Well, it's a peek into the thinking of one of the great minds of the French Enlightenment, and I like the idea of going back to the fundamentals of human nature to figure out education policy, but it's hard to buy most of his conclusions. The subservience of women, the uselessness of travel, the state with the highest population growth is the best governed? We must excuse him for not having been alive over the past two centuries, and enjoy his rich, grammatically complex prose style. I must admit, though, I was glad when I finished.Product details

One of the fundamental books of French thought. Puting it into perspective, it gives insight on the educational approach advocated by Rousseau.

Rousseau's Emile is a consummate work of a thinker who understood, like Plato did with the Republic, that an imagined education (like an imagined polity) can teach us volumes about what might be. There are legions of readers over the centuries who didn't "get" what Rousseau was doing (including Emile clubs in the late-eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries). If you can't imagine a world that might not be "practical"...you'll never understand this book. If you have an imagination AND a passion for practical change, this will change your life. It is one of the great works of the Western tradition. The English translation by Allan Bloom, by the way, is superb.
